If you’re currently in the process of planning an international trip, you’re probably already well aware of the fact that there are lots of different things to consider. You have to make sure your passport is up to date. You have to book your plane ticket. And you also have to make arrangements for where you’re going to stay and how you’re going to get around once you arrive to your final destination.
When it comes to traveling once you’re overseas, if you’re considering renting a car, that’s a really good idea. That way, you can get the places that you need to go at your own convenience. However, before making a reservation with an international car rental company, take out a moment to review the following five tips. It will make the process a lot easier if you do.
Book a reservation well in advance.
When it comes to renting a car, locally or abroad, it’s always a good idea to book well in advance (at least one to two weeks beforehand, if possible). There are a few reasons why. One is so that you can be sure that a car will be available. Another reason is because you can oftentimes get a cheaper rate by doing so. Finally, when you’re renting a car in another country, sometimes there are unique stipulations that you need to be made aware of. By calling ahead, you will be prepared; you can avoid any surprises that you might experience if you wait until you arrive.
Ask if you need a driver’s permit.
Although you already have a driver’s license, remember that it’s so that you can legally drive within your own country. This means that it may not be valid anywhere else. So as you’re speaking with a customer service agent, ask them if you’re required to get a driver’s permit. If so, you can get an International Driving Permit at AAA.com.
Call your insurance company about coverage.
One thing that you definitely don’t want to experience is being overseas, having a car accident, and not being insured. At the same time, you also don’t want to find yourself paying for coverage that your own insurance company may already offer. Therefore, make sure to contact your company directly to see if you’ve already got international protection – and if not – how much it would cost to get some.
Research the gas prices.
If you were to ask someone who works at Car Rental Portugal about another thing that you should keep in mind when it comes to getting a car rental abroad, one of the things that they would probably tell you is that you should research how much the gas prices are in the country that you are going to. You don’t want to go over budget on your trip. You can avoid this by pricing things out ahead of time.
Drive a stick.
Speaking of budgeting, another way to keep a few extra dollars in your pocket is by renting a car that comes with a stick shift. Being that many international rentals have a manual transmission, they are going to charge more for cars that come with automatic ones. So if you don’t know how to drive a stick yet, this would be an awesome time to learn – just in time for booking an international rental car. Happy traveling!
